NOTE: New Pokémon games like Pokemon Scarlet and Violet and Pokemon Go already have name-changing features. However, the name-changing feature is not available in older Pokemon games like Heart Gold and Soul Silver or Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. So, if you want to rename the Pokemon in the older game, you must require an NPC (Name Rater) to change the Pokemon name.

How to Rename Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet

  • Tap the X button, and the main menu will open.
  • Now select Check Summery to open the Pokémon’s Summery.

How to Rename Traded Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet

NOTE: You can rename both the link trade and surprising trade Pokemon just once. But keep in mind that if the previous trainer has already given you a nickname, you can’t rename it.

Here is how to rename a traded Pokemon.

  • Choose the traded Pokémon from the Pokémon menu that you want to change.
  • Go to the menu and select Check Summary.
  • In the check-summary menu, hit the X button.
  • The name option will be opened.
  • Type the new name, then click on the enter button.

How to Rename Pokemon in Other Pokémon Games

Pokémon GO

  • Open the game, and click on the Pokémon that you would like to change.
  • Click on the pencil icon next to the Pokemon and rename it.

Heart Gold and SoulSilver

  • First, take a magnet train station in Goldenrod City to find the name rater.
  • Now go to the yellow and purple houses on the left side of the Magnet train station.
  • Here, talk to the Name Rater to rename your Pokemon.

NOTE: You cannot rename traded Pokémon in this game because your Trainer ID has to line up with the Pokémon’s.

Legends Arceus

  • Press the up button on the d-pad device to get the Satchel menu.
  • Select the Pokémon you would like to change.
  • Now click on the change name option to rename it.

Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

  • Locate the Pokémart in Eterna.
  • Go to the building on the left side of the PokeMart.
  • Here, you will find the name Rater. Talk to him to give a name to your Pokémon.

Sword & Shield

  • Go to the main left counter of the Pokémon Center.
  • Here, chat with the man and select the rate a nickname option along with the Pokémon you’d like to give a new name.

Eevee & Pikachu

  • Tap X to go to the menu in the game.
  • Go to the party section and choose the Pokémon you would like to rename.
  • Press A, then scroll down, tap, and change the name.

Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon

  • Visit the tourist bureau building placed on the right side of the ferry terminal.
  • Go towards the right side.
  • There, you can see a character whose name is Rater.
  • Ask him to rename Pokemon as you like.

Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire

  • Go to the Pokémon Center in Slate Port City.
  • Keep walking to the northwest to reach Rater’s location, which is decorated with purple wallpaper.

X and Y

  • Go to the Pokémon Center in Camphrier Town.
  • The Rater will be in front of the PokeMart counter in a suit.

  • Go to the southern entrance in Lavender Town.
  • Enter the purple house and find the Rater.

Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald

  • Go towards the upper left corner of Slateport City.
  • Find a beige house with a purple roof.
  • Inside the house, chat with the name Rater to change your Pokémon name.

Gold, Silver, and Crystal

  • In Goldenrod City, go to the northern side of the city that connects to Route 35.

Red, Blue & Yellow

  • In Lavender Town, go to the southern side.

Q: Can you rename traded Pokémon in Scarlet?
You can’t rename the Pokémon you received from trading. But if you receive a traded Pokémon whose name has not changed, you can give it a name, but only once.

Q: Why can’t I rename Pokemon in Scarlet?

  • The Pokemon must have the same language region tag as the save file where you’re trying to rename it.
  • The Pokemon must not already have a nickname; it must have a generic species name.
  • The Pokemon must not be from an event because the fateful encounter tag prevents renaming the Pokemon.
  • You can’t rename Pokemon Scarlet while in dialogue or in battle. 
  • You can’t also rename Pokemon if you insert more than 12 characters.
